Facts About Curaçao 🇨🇼

Curaçao, officially the Country of Curaçao, is a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is an island country located in the southern Caribbean Sea, about 65 km north of Venezuela and 80 km southeast of Aruba. Curaçao includes the main island and the much smaller, uninhabited island of Klein Curaçao.

🌍 Geography and Demographics

The 2023 census recorded a population of 158,000 people in Curaçao. The country has an area of 444 km²; its capital is Willemstad. Together with Aruba and Bonaire, Curaçao forms part of the ABC islands.

🏛️ Political Status

Curaçao was part of the Curaçao and Dependencies colony from 1815 to 1954, and later the Netherlands Antilles from 1954 to 2010. The island achieved autonomy in 2010.

👥 Indigenous Peoples and First Europeans

The original inhabitants of Curaçao were the Arawak and Caquetio Amerindians. The first Europeans recorded as seeing the island were members of a Spanish expedition under Alonso de Ojeda in 1499. The island became a Spanish colony after that expedition.

🇳🇱 Dutch Colonization

In 1634, the Dutch West India Company under Admiral Johann van Walbeeck invaded the island. The Dutch West India Company founded the capital of Willemstad in 1634 on the banks of an inlet called the Schottegat. From 1662, the Dutch West India Company made Curaçao a centre of the Atlantic slave trade.

⚔️ British Occupation and Slavery Abolition

British forces occupied Curaçao twice during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The abolition of slavery in 1863 led to economic shifts and migrations.

🛢️ Oil Discovery

The discovery of oil in the Maracaibo Basin in 1914 transformed Curaçao into a major refinery location. Crude oil production in Venezuela was inexpensive, and refineries on Aruba and Curaçao operated in global markets.

📜 Name Origins

One explanation for the island’s name is that Curaçao was the autonym by which its Indigenous peoples identified themselves. Another theory claims that Portuguese sailors referred to the island as Ilha da Curação ‘island of healing’.
