Addison Mitchell McConnell III was born on February 20, 1942, in Sheffield, Alabama. He is an American politician and attorney serving as the senior United States senator from Kentucky since 1985.

McConnell was born to Julia Odene โDeanโ McConnell and Addison Mitchell McConnell II. He grew up in Athens, Alabama, and is of Scots-Irish and English descent.
At age two, his upper left leg was paralyzed by a polio attack. He received treatment at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation.
He graduated from the University of Louisville with a B.A. in political science in 1964. He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1967.

From 1968 to 1970, McConnell worked as chief legislative assistant to Senator Marlow Cook. In 1977, he was elected Jefferson County judge/executive.
He was reelected in 1981 and occupied the office until his election to the U.S. Senate in 1984. In his early years, he was known as a pragmatist and a moderate Republican.

McConnell served as Senate majority leader from 2015 to 2021. He is the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history.

During the first Trump administration, the Senate passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and confirmed a record number of federal appeals court judges. McConnell invoked the nuclear option to eliminate the 60-vote requirement for Supreme Court nominations.
