Lionel Andrรฉs “Leo” Messi was born on 24 June 1987 in Rosario, Santa Fe Province. He is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for and captains both Inter Miami and the Argentina national team.

Messi has set numerous records including eight Ballons d’Or, six European Golden Shoes, and eight times being named the world’s best player by FIFA. In 2025, he was named the All Time Men’s World Best Player by the IFFHS.
He is the most decorated player in professional football history, having won 46 team trophies. His records include most goals in a calendar year (91), most goals for a single club (672 for Barcelona), and most goals in La Liga (474).
๐ International Career
Messi is the Argentina national team’s all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player. He won the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics and led Argentina to a World Cup victory in 2022, the country’s first in 36 years.
He was central to ending Argentina’s 28-year trophy drought by winning the 2021 Copa Amรฉrica. Messi’s third major international title arrived when Argentina won the 2024 Copa Amรฉrica.

Messi was the third of four children of Jorge Messi and Celia Cuccittini. On his father’s side, Messi is of Italian and Spanish descent, and on his mother’s side he has primarily Italian ancestry.
At age four, Messi joined local club Abanderado Grandoli FC where he was coached by his father. He started playing for Newell’s Old Boys at age seven, scoring almost 500 goals during six years with the club.

At age 10, Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency and began therapy at age 11. Newell’s agreed to contribute to the cost but later reneged on their promise.
Messi’s family arranged a trial with Barcelona in September 2000 when he was 13. First-team director Carles Rexach wrote a contract on a paper napkin on 14 December to prove Barcelona’s commitment.
